A 1920’s apartment in New York’s Upper East Side received a contemporary update by design firm Stephen Sills Assoc and John B. Murray Architect. This swoon-worthy apartment masterfully blends vibrant furnishings, French antiques, mid-century furniture and contemporary art work from Matisse, Picasso and Andy Warhol.
The print in the master bedroom is by Henri Matisse and 19th Century Swedish bench. The bed’s corona is of an Etro fabric for Clarence House that was also used for the drapery.
In the entrance hall, antique mirrors and Italian neoclassical consoles with marble tops flank the doorway to the dining room, 1940’s French light fixture.
The living room features matching circa-1700 French mirrored bookcases from Galerie Steinitz, Pablo Picasso artwork and a John Chamberlain sculpture sits on the left cabinet and an Andy Warhol silkscreen hangs above the one on the right. The club chairs are by Sills-designed club chairs and the bronze Ginkgo chairs are by Claude Lalanne.
A Roy Lichtenstein painting hangs in the living room nestled between bronze Charles Paris lamps that sit atop 1940’s Jansen tables. A leaf-like bronze coupe by Hervé Van der Straeten is displayed on the cocktail table and the circa-1900 Amritsar rug is from Beauvais Carpets.
In the master bedroom’s sitting area, a custom-made sofa upholstered in Pollack fabric stands in front of a George Condo painting; the rug is by Beauvais.
The artwork over the living room fireplace is by Andy Warhol. I absolutely love those bronze Ginkgo chairs!
The ceiling in the family room is sheathed in Maya Romanoff brushed-metal-leaf wallpaper, the two-panel artwork is by Keith Tyson and overlooks the Sills-designed sofa that is upholstered in Pollack fabric, Fabrizio Cocchia cocktail table.
The dining room walls are paneled in hand-painted embossed leather, the artwork by Anish Kapoor sits above the fireplace, and 19th Century Russian chairs surround the table with Franco Deboni ceramic vessels from Bernd Goeckler Antiques. The carpet is by F. J. Hakimian.
In a guest room, a trio of prints by Vik Muniz hangs over the Sills-designed daybed; the painting on the far wall is by Gedi Sibony.
This elegant child’s bedroom features a custom-made bed upholstered in Schumacher fabric that is also used for the window treatment; the bed-curtain fabric is by Castel.
The second child’s bedroom is whimsical and boasts a Saarinen womb chair, an ottoman from Design Within Reach, Sils designed bed, and a rug is by Beauvais.
The dining room features a Lucio Fontana painting, left, and a Cy Twombly art work above the tufted banquette, and a 1940’s French chandelier.
Eero Saarinen Tulip chairs encircle the kitchen’s custom made glass top table.
