I hope you had a wonderful Valentine’s Day and holiday weekend! We had icy, frigid temps followed by a balmy 67 degrees today. I spent the day running errands and shopping with my sunroof open. It was bliss!
I’m smitten with these chic black and gold wooden boxes adorned with agate and stumbled upon this DIY that recreates them at a fraction of the cost.
First, select a wooden box and a slice of agate in any size and colour that you like. You can source the agate online or perhaps at a local craft store. You will also need:
Acrylic black paint
High gloss varnish
Mod podge
Painter’s tape
Paintbrushes
Gilding wax to gild and patinate
Extra fine sandpaper
Black felt
Gold leaves
Transparent glue
Lightly sand your wooden box to make it perfectly smooth. Clean with a damp cloth and paint. Sand again slightly and put a second coat of black paint for a perfect finish.
Put the painter’s tape around the edge of the lid and the upper contour of the other part of the box to delineate the area to be covered by gold. Then simply using a brush, or if you prefer a soft cloth, cover the inside of the box and the top of the lid with the golden patinating wax. Once the wax has dried, you can apply the high gloss varnish with a brush. You will need two to three coats.
You can paint the inside of the box and adhere black felt to the bottom to keep it from scratching your furniture.
For the agate slice, apply mod podge over the contour and gently adhere gold leaf along the edge. Next, secure the agate on your box with transparent glue.
The final result ~ a chic, agate box for your treasures! I would love this box in white and gold also.
xoxo, B

How very pretty. Agate comes in such wonderful colours, doesn't it?
These are so effective and as agate comes in various shades it would be easy to match to the décor. Thanks for the tutorial.
